What is Lactate Threshold Testing?

Why Does Your Lactate Threshold Matter?

Because your lactate threshold is a powerful indicator of endurance performance. It tells us how efficiently your body is using energy and how well it can sustain different intensities of effort. With this data, we can identify your optimal training zones which ensures every session has a clear purpose.

Who is Lactate Testing Helpful For?

Lactate testing isn’t just for elite athletes. It’s for anyone who wants:

  • Targeted training based on physiology, not guesswork
  • Better pacing strategies for races or events
  • More efficient workouts that improve fitness in a sustainable manner
  • Insight into progress over time through re-testing

We regularly test runners, triathletes, cyclists, and team sport athletes but it’s just as useful for recreational athletes, busy professionals balancing training with life, and anyone coming back from injury who wants to train with structure and intent.

How Will Lactate Testing Help My Running?

If you’ve ever asked yourself any of the following questions, lactate testing can give you the answers:

  • Am I training at the right intensity to build endurance or speed?
  • Why am I not seeing improvements, even though I’m training hard?
  • How do I know when I’m going too hard on my “easy” runs?
  • What’s the best heart rate or pace to target during sessions?

Using a structured treadmill protocol, we’ll measure your lactate levels at increasing intensities. You’ll walk (or run) away with a clear understanding of your Zone 1–5 training ranges, your LT1 and LT2 thresholds, and exactly how to apply these to your current training or race plan.

Lactate Threshold Testing For Runners – FAQs

Q: Do I need to be super fit to do a lactate test?

A: Not at all. Lactate testing is useful for people at all fitness levels. The protocol is progressive and tailored to you, whether you’re a recreational runner or an experienced athlete. It’s designed to be challenging, but safe and manageable for where you’re at right now.

Q: How is the test performed?

A: The test is performed on a treadmill using a progressive, incremental protocol. Every three minutes, the speed increases slightly, and we take a small drop of blood from your fingertip or earlobe to measure lactate. The test usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.

Q: Is lactate testing painful?

A: The test involves a small finger prick for each lactate sample, similar to a blood glucose test. It might sting briefly, but most people find it very tolerable. The test itself is a controlled effort and you can stop at any time.

Q: How can my lactate threshold test improve my running training?

A: You’ll receive a detailed report including your lactate curve, heart rate and pace zones (Zone 1 to Zone 5), and key thresholds (LT1 and LT2). We’ll also break down what this means for your training—so you know how to apply it right away to your sessions and races.

Q: How often should runners do a lactate threshold test?

A: We recommend retesting every 12-16 weeks, especially if your training volume or goals are changing. You could also line-up the testing with your training cycles e.g. at the start of a new training block. Regular testing allows us to monitor your progress and adjust your training zones as your fitness improves.

Q: Can I combine this with my running or strength program?

A: Yes! In fact, lactate testing is one of the most effective ways to personalise your program. If you’re part of our online or in-person coaching services, we’ll use your test results to fine-tune your running, strength, or hybrid program to match your current capacity and goals.
